I asked her to consider something: What if depression wasn’t a fundamental part of who she was? What if it was just an illusion, something created by her own mind? What if it had no real power over her?

If I were to go back into my past, there were times when I didn’t even understand pain. I didn’t even know I was in pain. I just thought I liked to drink a lot and have a good time. I didn’t realize it was pain that was driving me to do that. Then, the pain became so intense that it was undeniable.
And the drinking became heavier. But it didn’t work anymore.
So, I found myself experimenting with self-medication—street drugs. It wasn’t long before I became addicted. Not just to cocaine, but to a very powerful form of it—crack cocaine. There is immense depression in addiction.
And the worst part? The “answer” for the depression feeds the depression. You take more drugs to get rid of it. And sure, it leads to a high—momentary relief. But then? You’re right back in depression.
